Zel smiled as he approached the young, brown-haired noblewoman that Nancy had noticed staring at him. Normally, attention like that would have made him go bright red - assuming he'd admit that anyone would pay attention like that to a chimera like him in the first place. Thanks to the virus, though, he wasn't worrying about his appearance for once, and could actually appreciate someone being that interested in him.

His approach sparked off a bout of giggling and whispering between the girl and her friends. The chimera waved. "Hi. How are you ladies doing?"

There were variations on the theme of "fine", with the distinct implication that his arrival had made things that much better. The brunette with the roving eyes plucked up the courage to say, "We saw you dancing with Prince Edward's fiancee. Who are you?"

Zel grinned. "Nancy's a friend of mine. My name's Zelgadiss Graywords, but please, call me Zel."

"She seemed very happy to see you," a blonde noblewoman remarked with a sly smile.

"We're very good friends." As a matter of fact, it had seemed a little strange how enthusiastically Nancy had greeted him, but Zel didn't worry about it. "You ladies haven't told me your names yet."

The group of about a half-dozen or so noblewomen of various ages introduced themselves, though the blonde was obviously imagining some past between Zel and Nancy. The brunette's name turned out to be Aurelie.

As the band started up another song, Zel smiled. "Aurelie. That's a pretty name." He held out a stony-skinned hand. "Would you like to dance, Aurelie?"

Aurelie had looked a bit jealous when Zel had danced with Nancy. Those looks were nothing compared to the glares she got when the chimera led her out onto the dance floor. The blonde muttered something that sounded like "He likes her, the lucky little witch."

Somewhere in the middle of the song, Aurelie's face went red. This was because Zel had leaned in close and whispered something in her ear. This something was, "Nancy tells me you were staring at me earlier."

"I-I, um..." Aurelie stammered.

Zel smiled. "It's alright. Kind of flattering, actually. I've never caught anyone staring at my ass before."

After a moment, Aurelie said, "In my defense, you do have a really nice ass."

Zel grinned at the compliment. "Thanks.

"Um. I mean, not that I..." She seemed to have trouble finishing that sentence.

"It's alright. Honestly, I kind of have a girlfriend." Well he would once he got around to saying something, anyway. "But there's no harm in one more dance, is there?"

When the song ended, Aurelie smiled. A little breathlessly, she asked, "You're not a fairy, are you?"

Zel grinned a little. "Nope, just a chimera."

"What's that?" she asked curiously.

His grin abruptly vanished. Even under the effects of the virus, there were things he just didn't want to burden others with. He shook his head sadly. Quietly, he said, "Pray you never have to find out, Aurelie."

The noblewoman gasped. "You poor thing," she breathed, trailing a hand over the stone of his face.

Zel flushed. "It's no big deal, really, just something that happened. Don't worry about it."

Suddenly - and very visibly to the rest of the room - he gave her a peck on the cheek. "Cheer up. It's not the end of the world. I've got to go now, but maybe we'll see each other again."

Aurelie's lips brushed his cheek. "Goodbye, Zel."

"Goodbye, Aurelie." Zel half-listened as she ran back to her friends, whose general reaction seemed to be "He kissed you?!?" He grinned and wandered off to find Nancy.
