RL with Azula - So you thought you were safe?

Zel was in a very good mood. Quite apart from feeling as if he was drunk out of his mind, he was almost certain he'd actually managed to win an argument with Azula for the first time in... ever. He managed to force himself to stop being smug, being aware, if only through a haze of alcohol he hadn't actually consumed, that this would not be useful in helping Azula.

He was still having trouble with the concept of her not wanting his help - surely if the virus was that bad she should welcome someone willing to help her relieve it? Eventually he dismissed it as Azula being her normal difficult self and decided that she'd surely warm up to the idea eventually. He couldn't help giggling a little at the unintentional pun in his own internal monologue, either.

He hummed happily to himself as he he gave a slightly arrhythmic knock at the door to her room. "Hello, Fire Lord?" he called out.

There was a long silence. Then she sat up, slowly, with her back to him.

He smiled, reaching out to trail a hand across her shoulders again. "Thass better."

No shivers this time, but she did lean back a little. "Why?"

"'Cause I'd feel really shtupid if I came here to help you and I didn't know it was working. I know, I know," he added, "you're gonna say I'm shtupid anyway..."

"That's right. I'm not going to tell you if it's working or not." She pulled the blankets ever tighter, but stayed sitting up.

"Yeah, but at leas' this way I can see you." He moved a little closer, possibly without realizing it, and started to rub her back again. "Besides, I di'n mean workin' like that. I meant if it was making you feel better."

"You can't tell that." She kept her face purposely impassive. "And you're starting to sound a little creepy."

Zel looked puzzled. "Wantin' you t'feel better's creepy now?"

"Talking about how you have to look at me is creepy."

Zel lowered his head apologetically. "Sorry, I don't have a... a thingy, y'know, that means you don't say everything you think. Like a sieve. I dun got one of those when I'm drunk."

She pursed her lips, not that he could see. "It's clear."

"Sorry," he muttered, his cheeks going even redder than they wer from the drunkenness.

"Hmmm," she hummed, less sharply than she had during their discussion over the community. She leaned back even further, her eyes falling shut.

"Izzat okay, 'zula?" he asked softly.

"What do you mean?" she said. "I'm always okay."

"I meant... being like ths." He sighed. "Never mind. Wazzastupid idea to begin with."

"Being like what?" Talking about it made her feel slightly uncomfortable-- it always did, even with people who she cared for-- but she didn't let that show.

"Never mind," he mumbled, his hand shifting to trail down her side.

"Fine." Her head dipped forward, her forehead coming to rest against the headboard.

He rubbed her shoulders again gently. "Whass wrong?"

"Nothing."

"Shorry. You looked upshet." Judging by the slurring, the virus' effects were starting to intensify for some reason.

"You're obviously not a good judge of body language." Azula picked up on the slurring, and was not pleased. If he started acting disorderly she wouldn't hesitate to kick him out, no matter how much comfort his touch was providing.
